OMAPERE

Gateway to the Hokianga

After leaving the wonders of the Waipoua Kauri Forest, you pass through the tiny Hokianga settlements of:

  • Waimamaku made famous in the past by its world famous cheeses. These days you will find the New Zealands smallest brewery.
  • Waiotemarama where one will find the Labyrinth Woodworks and Maze, and the fabulous Waiotemarama Waterfall and kauri forest walks.
  • Kaikai Beach - a magnificent beach and river, with big sand dunes, good surf, great fishing and plentiful shellfish.

State Highway 12 then takes you to the top of Pakia Hill, where one is overcome by the scenic beauty that spreads out in front of you.

Heading along State Highway 12, one comes to the road that takes you out to the old Signal Station, from where the Coastal Walks start and where one again has marvelous ocean and harbour views.

As you descend down into Omapere, and a must is a visit to the Hokianga Information Centre and Museum, which is opposite the local Area School. Here one is able to catch up on the local history, and arm themselves with lots of brochures and information for many of the activities, eateries and accommodation places around the area. Here one can book their accommodation, activities and travel to other destinations
